New research from Aldi has found Brits now prefer their English wines to wines from countries known for having some of the world's best winemakers, such as Spain, Australia and New Zealand.
The supermarket celebrated another year of success in the English wine category, with sales increasing by 60 percent year on year.
The survey, which took its lead from some of its larger counterparts, revealed that shoppers believe English vineyards are better at producing wine than the likes of South Africa (4 per cent), New Zealand (8 per cent), Spain (6 per cent) and Argentina (2 per cent). ), and Chile (4 percent).
France ranked third with 15%, and the only two countries that received a higher rating than the United Kingdom were France with 20% and Italy with 17%.
Meanwhile, Champagne (40%) was king when it came to a festive drink, with 15% believing “English sparkling Champagne is the new Champagne.”

The research was conducted among 2,000 UK-based wine drinkers by Aldi and conducted by Perspectus Global in March 2024.
