One of the UK’s top wine experts has shared their top picks for lesser-known Aldi wines, including one that promises to transport you all the way to the Greek islands. The budget supermarket chain has teamed up with Sam Caborn, of the Institute of Masters of Wine, who has revealed some summer drinks that should be on your radar if you’re a wine lover.
With prices starting at just £5.99, wine lovers can experience ‘unique and local’ wines that don’t get much attention, and get delicious drinks that don’t compromise on quality or value. She’s selected six wines to consider, including the Athlone Assyrtico.
Sam recommends steering clear of the popular blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio in favor of a Rueda Verdejo or a Picpoul de Pinet. “This summer, step away from your traditional white wine choices and opt for something a little different like a refreshing Picpoul de Pinet or a fruity Luberon Blanc,” Sam says.
“Summer is all about refreshing, easy-drinking wines, and these white wines certainly deliver. Originating in popular European regions like Santorini and the South of France, these authentic gems bring some Mediterranean sunshine to your wine glass and create a vacation-like feeling of home—even if it’s raining.”
Aldi is selling a bottle of Athlon Assyrtiko for just £8.49, a white wine that will add a new flavour to your palate, making you feel like you’re on holiday in Santorini without leaving your home. Sam said: “Santorini is the spiritual home of the Assyrtiko grape, so allow yourself to be transported to the beautiful Greek island with this fresh and elegant wine.
“Flavored with lemon, apricot seeds and lime, it's the perfect accompaniment to grilled seafood, fish, baked scallops and fresh homemade salad.”
Other Sam picks include the Baron Amarillo Rueda Verdejo, £5.99, which she describes as a must-have for Sauvignon Blanc fans. “From the Castilla y Leon region, this juicy, balanced wine offers lovely flavours of lemon, green apple, peach and quince, with a hint of melon. It’s great with seafood appetisers, paella or tomato salad – it’s a great wine,” she said.
For fans of Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris, opt for the specially selected Picpoul de Pinet (£7.49, 75ml), flavoured with baked apple, plum and peach. Sam said: “This is a refreshing, crisp summer drink from the Languedoc region. It offers an attractive straw colour with flavours of baked apple, plum and peach. It’s a classic pairing with shellfish, fish, seafood, spaghetti and squid.”
Other expert picks included Specially Selected Coteaux De Béziers Viognier (£8.49, 75ml), Specially Selected The Puzzle (£8.99, 75ml) for Riesling fans, and Specially Selected Luberon Blanc (£8.99, 75ml).
