Campden BRI has opened a new dedicated wine laboratory and tasting centre in Guildford, UK, marking a significant investment in the local wine industry.
The new wine services laboratory is located in Campden, Surrey Research Park, and will support UK winemakers and international wineries exporting to the UK market.
Campden BRI provides services and products to the food and drink industry in the UK and Europe including consultancy, analysis, testing, training, legislation and manufacturing advice. Its facilities provide space for product development, sensory and consumer studies, including a dedicated brewing and wine division.
Now open, the new wine lab will allow UK winemakers access to a wide range of services provided by the lab’s staff, covering the full spectrum of scientific solutions to simple and complex wine-related challenges. A series of opening events will take place in late August, when members of the UK wine industry will be invited to visit the facility.
Campden has appointed Senior Analytical Chemist Robert Pride and Industry and Technology Development Manager Gregory Dunn to provide specialist advice on site.
Pride joins with 12 years’ experience in the wine industry, having been Regional Director for Endeavour Drinks Group prior to joining Campden BRI. Dan was previously Head of Wine at Plumpton College in Sussex, UK, which trains winemakers and viticulturists at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The launch of the Wine Services Lab comes as industry body WineGB released data showing that enough grapes will be harvested in 2023 to make 22 million bottles of wine, a 68% increase on Britain’s previous record harvest in 2018. The lab follows the recent announcement that Campen BRI has become WineGB’s new scientific and technical partner, building on Campden’s partnership with the Australian Wine Research Institute in spring 2023.
“We have invested heavily in state-of-the-art analytical equipment in a brand new laboratory, which will maintain our offering and technical capabilities well into the future,” commented Peter Hedridge, CEO of Campden BRI.
“The new laboratory is a real vote of confidence in the local wine industry, which has been growing steadily and now requires the best technical support and quality consultancy to help it compete on the global stage,” he added.
