Denbies Wine Estate has been awarded B Corp certification, the highest score in its sector in the UK.
The Surrey Hills-based winery, which is also a significant contract winery, will begin the certification process in May 2023, with the new recognition coming shortly after it achieved UKCCC Net Zero certification just a few months earlier.
With 265 acres of vineyards under cultivation, Denbies is one of the largest vineyards in the UK and has been working to hone its sustainable credentials for some time. B Corp examines every aspect of business operations, including governance, workers, community, environment and customer benefits.
“We are very excited to be part of the B Corp organization,” said CEO Chris White.
“Along with our net-zero certification earlier this year, we see this as a benchmark for developing and sharing our company’s ethics as best we can. Becoming a certified B Corp and being one of the first companies to embrace this global movement to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability is critical to us as an independently managed company.”
Customer demand for sustainable practices has “never been greater,” White added, citing Waitrose as an example of a customer actively seeking sustainable products, while balancing profit with core purpose.
Denbigh is also a major visitor destination, with its new B Corp status sending a strong signal about the direction the UK wine industry is taking more broadly, as environmental and social performance comes under increasing scrutiny.
