Kingsland Drinks has secured an exclusive deal with Lidl GB to bring wines from Ukrainian winery Bolgrad to the UK, the first Ukrainian wine to be listed by a British supermarket.
The Duo white wine and the Saperavi red wine, both from the Odessa region, are now available under the Bolgrad Select label for a limited time.
The 2023 Duo, a blend of Chardonnay and indigenous Sukholmansky grapes, is said to offer a dry white flavor balanced with white blossom, dried apricots and citrus. Meanwhile, Bolgrad Select Saperavi, a variety more associated with Georgian wine, is a medium-bodied, fruity red wine meant to appeal to Malbec drinkers.
Both bottles prominently feature the blue and yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag with a unique tree illustration, intended to enhance shelf appeal and encourage trial.
Since partnering with Bolgrad Winery in 2023, Kingsland Drinks has worked through significant logistical challenges to bring the wine to the UK. Katherine Glass, Buying Director at Kingsland Drinks, said: “We are very excited and proud to see Bolgrade wines on Lidl GB shelves – these first two menus are of high quality and bring a mix of local and international grape varieties to the drinks aisle. We know British consumers will welcome the wines; They enjoy the unique styles and will show their support for the Bolgrade Collection.”
Glass spoke of Kingsland Drinks' mission to diversify the UK wine category by introducing varieties from emerging regions. “Kingsland Drinks has long been a champion of producers of new and interesting varieties from emerging wine regions, and this latest listing for Bolgrad at Lidl GB represents a major breakthrough in putting Ukrainian wines into the mainstream. We urge retailers to follow our lead and offer a wide range of Bolgrad wines on shelves to give consumers the opportunity to try and explore the potential of Ukrainian wine.
