After nearly 30 years of producing award-winning wines, Ridgeview, the leading English sparkling wine producer, has been awarded a Gold Medal by the Sustainable Wines of Great Britain (SWGB).
This honour highlights Ridgeview's commitment to land conservation, vineyard stewardship and the preservation of the South Downs region of Sussex, where the property is located.
Ridgeview has played a pivotal role in the rise of English wine over the past three decades, winning numerous awards. As the first B Corp certified winery in England, Ridgeview remains committed to environmentally friendly winemaking, ensuring the winery is operated sustainably.
Founded in 2020, Sustainable Wines of Great Britain promotes sustainability through a rigorous certification process and a community of like-minded producers.
“Long term. Longevity. Sustainable. That’s what we’re trying to achieve,” said Matt Strogenel, vineyard manager. “Being SWGB Gold certified means we can confidently say our vineyard is sustainable – and will continue to do business for many years to come.”
The property's sustainable practices, which have been recognised by the SWGB, include gentle pruning techniques that match the natural tendencies of some of the country's oldest vines, ensuring their preservation.
The vineyard team also focuses on enhancing microbial life in the soil while protecting natural habitats. Ground cover is maintained year-round in mature vineyards to prevent soil erosion, improve water retention and promote biodiversity, creating a vibrant ecosystem.
A variety of plants are also grown within the vineyard to support a healthy environment for both the vineyard and its surroundings. As a result, Ridgeview has eliminated the use of herbicides, with the vineyard being herbicide-free for over two years. Increasing soil organic matter to improve fertility and structure remains a focus for the future.
“We are very proud to celebrate the great achievement of the Ridgeview Vineyard team,” added Karen Bradshaw, Chief Compliance and Sustainability Officer. “The re-certification and gold medal are a reflection of the hard work of the team, as well as our ongoing commitment to sustainability and improving the vineyard ecosystem.”
