Tesco has warned shoppers buying wine not to “freeze” their bottles if the liquid has been opened but only half drunk. The UK’s biggest supermarket giant – which rivals Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons, Asda and Sainsbury’s – published the advice on its website.
Tesco said: “Have you opened a bottle of wine but know you won’t finish it? Pour the rest into ice cube trays (or a freezer bag if you have a larger supply), then add a cube to recipes as needed. Give an extra boost to sauces, add red wine to a Bolognese sauce for a deeper flavour or use white wine in risotto.”
New advice from Tesco in March revealed that freezing wine, eggs and milk are unusual ways Britons can help prevent food waste. Courtney Pallett, Tesco’s campaigns manager, said: “The fridge is your friend when it comes to reducing food waste and avoiding throwing it away. Foods that often end up in the bin, such as bananas and avocados, can be saved by freezing them for later use.

“Good food should never go to waste, so we’re proud to be sponsoring WRAP’s Food Waste Action Week this year.” WRAP estimates that 4.7 million tonnes of edible food is thrown away by households in the UK every year. Food Waste Action Week is its flagship annual campaign, bringing together businesses, government organisations and global partners to support citizens to develop the tools they need to reduce food waste in their homes.
Tesco added: “To mark WRAP’s Food Waste Action Week, the company is giving customers tips on how to use their fridges to save money on their weekly shopping and reduce the amount of food they throw away. While most of us know that you can freeze the end of a loaf of bread, few of us know that bananas, eggs, yoghurt and avocado are fine to store in the freezer too.
“The best part is, you don't have to throw away that last glass of wine in the bottle… because you can freeze your Merlot, too!”
